Why are endings and exits often badly handled by organisations?

Why are endings and exits often badly handled by organisations? What’s been your experience? What advice can you share?

- It’s hard if you are shown the exit suddenly, with little time to prepare or to say a proper goodbye
- It’s especially hard right now, after months cut off from colleagues, family & friends
- Without good information you may struggle to make sense of what has happened to you
- You may feel powerless, unsure who you can talk to, doubtful that you have been treated fairly and worried about what would happen if you speak up

If you are the person managing someone else towards the exit ...

- From your position of relative safety, you cannot understand the negative impact on the person leaving
- Communicating the decision by email is not communication; a face to face meeting is essential
- You should take steps to minimise the potential negative impacts on the mental health of the person leaving and also support the survivors (the ones lucky enough to be staying on)
- If you treat someone with dignity during their exit, there is a greater opportunity that they will think and speak highly of you in the years to come

Does your organisation have a formal policy for managing exits that avoids the worst mistakes and which is rooted in best practice?

How have education and life long learning changed your life?

In January 2011, I received my “Entrepreneurial Univesity Leadership Programme” certificate from the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. This executive education programme changed my life.

By 2012 I had changed job and was playing a leading role for an organisation that had made a strategic commitment to becoming more entrepreneurial.

Within another year, in 2013, to gain real-life experience of start-ups, I had become self-employed and set up my own international consultancy.

In 2017, building on the success of my consultancy and to gain experience of scale-ups, I founded the Entrepreneurial Mindset Network, an international organisation which now has members in 84 countries.

Our vision is a world where everybody can benefit from having an entrepreneurial mindset, whether they run their own business or are employed in the private, public or not for profit sectors.

In April 2021, I will begin my 9th year of owning my own business, leading an organisation that is providing learning opportunities for people all over the world to become more entrepreneurial.

I can honestly say that education and life long learning continue to change my life. Have you had a similar experience? What is your story?
