On 26th March a CREATIVE SKILLS conference was scheduled to be held in Brussels and I was invited to moderate the event. Due to the coronavirus crisis the planned event was unable to go ahead. However, instead of cancelling, the organisers of the event, the British Council, worked with the speakers and myself to devise a replacement webinar. We all quickly learned how to plan an online event, with the aim of engaging participants in an online environment.
As it happens the webinar was a great success, with over 70 online participants. As the moderator for the event, I was delighted by the positive feedback, with one participant writing “Wow, amazing conference with lot of interesting organisations and very stimulating contributions.” Some of the things that made the event successful were short presentations, strict moderation to keep things to time, good technical support and a rehearsal for speakers a few days before the event. The webinar presented the outcomes of two projects:

Interesting conclusions were generated from our small group discussion of this topic at the MERIT Summit and Leadership Community in Seville. We concluded employees are afraid to fail because of a culture of blame. We thought employees should not be afraid to fail & proposed a culture that supports more risk-taking. Some of our main points:- A culture of blame - nobody wants to be seen as a failure - discussion of failure is avoided - customers suffer when there are failures A culture of risk taking - experimentation should be encouraged + learning - Simulations (e.g. planning for disaster recovery) can be a safe way to explore failure - Prototyping allows for learning & quick correction of minor failures
